County’s Electrician Licensing Moves Toward Common Sense

Circuit Breakers Defined

A circuit breaker is defined as an electrical switch, designed to protect an electrical circuit from damage caused by an overload or short circuit. A circuit breaker is meant to detect a fault condition of these types and interrupt current flow by "tripping".

The problem with FPE Stab-Lok circuit breakers is that when an unsafe condition, such as an overload or short circuit occurs, the FPE breakers fails to "trip" which is what a circuit breaker is designed to do in an electrical system.

Federal Pacific Hazards

This hazard worsens for double pole breakers. Double pole breakers are used on higher load circuits, such as for a clothes dryer. Under certain conditions it is possible for one leg of these circuits to attempt to trip the breaker, resulting in a jammed breaker which at minimum will afterward not trip under any load condition, or worse yet cause a high risk failure.

The FPE Dilemma

Although documentation of persistent hazards, and real life loss exist, there are still individuals that chose to ignore the warning signs. For example, some people try assuming a position that the "since the home has not burned to the ground in the last 25 years, how could someone predict that it will". Well, despite what some people postulate even with proof of the contrary, that FPE panels are hazards, this still can be a bone of contention. At Cooper Electric, we want our customers to be aware of any existing hazards.

FPE panels which are found in existing houses, 25 years and older, can/have burned homes down. As recently as, August of 2012 a Federal Pacific Electric Panel started a fire that burned a home down in the Wyoming Neighborhood of Cincinnati. The structure caught fire at the FPE panel in the garage of the home on Chisholm Trail and damage was estimated at $240,000. The home was over 25 years old.

FPE use

FPE panels were popularly used in home construction in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has deemed them prone to failures, but has not recalled them. However, FPE had their UL Listings revoked in the 1980s.

Furthermore, incompetent handymen who install used FPE circuit breakers as band-aid fixes to replace failed FPE circuit breakers are not solving a more complex problem of the entire panel itself.

The variables of the conditions of the circuit breakers, how much load the circuit will be under, and IF the breaker will trip... all become part of the RISK that you are taking on with an FPE panel. The best solution for an FPE circuit breaker, is to replace the entire panel. A new panel from a proven manufacturer, who are still in busienss and have not been in litigation nor class action lawsuits for the lack of safety with their product, such as Federal Pacific Electric. On Sunday December 30, 2012 three people were taken to the hospital for carbon monoxide exposure.

Clifton Heights - Three People were taken to the hospital for evaluation early Saturday after Cincinnati fire officials said they were exposed to high levels of carbon monoxide at an apartment building in the 100 block of Parker Street.

Firefighters were called to the building around 4am after receiving reports that several people were ill.

Eight occupants were standing outside the building suffering from various symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, fire officials said. High carbon monoxide levels were found inside the building, they said.

Information about the conditions of the three occupants were not immediately available.

Duke Energy and the Cincinnati Building Department were called in to seal off all gas appliances in the building. The tenants were not permitted back into their apartments, fire officials said.

Curtailed Hydro from Wanapum Dam Crack: An ‘Unpredicted Change in the Wind’?

“Projections show that wind generation will increase rapidly to approximately 6,250 MW by 2013.  This vast amount of wind power interconnected to the Bonneville Power Administration’s transmission grid will likely overwhelm the existing federal hydropower system’s ability to provide sufficient integration services in the future….

As the percentage of wind generation grows, the risk of having a major system event from an unpredicted change of the wind energy level increases.”

The magnitude and location of the current unfolding story of a large crack in the hydro-rich Wanapum Dam on the Columbia River in Central Washington became known only a week after the Grant County Public Utility District declared a potential emergency.  Officials reported there is no immediate threat of a catastrophic breach in the dam but called the situation a “serious problem.”  The cause of the crack probably will not be known for some time.  The dam is still producing hydropower, but curtailed production from a water drawdown behind the dam could be felt by California electricity users.

But what did the infrastructure consultants MWH (quoted above) mean when it stated in a technical report for the U.S. Corps of Engineers in 2009 about the problematic integration of hydropower and wind energy: “the risk of having a major system event for an unpredicted change of the wind energy level increases”?

According to the Wind Energy Resource Atlas of the U.S.: “Spring and summer are the seasons of maximum wind power” for the Columbia River Corridor.  Spring is also when snowmelt fills the reservoirs behind dams. The mile-long Wanapum Dam, built in 1959, has 10 reinforced concrete spillway gates each of which are 65-feet wide, 126 feet tall and 92-feet deep. The net head or fall of water on the dam is 80 feet.  If the one cracked spillway failed the water flowing that opening in the dam would be no more than normal for this time of year.  But the water behind the dam has had to be drawn down resulting in less hydroelectric generation.  Wanapum also has 10 hydroelectric turbines on the opposite side of the dam that was not cracked.

However, early reports of the dam crack were vague and were believed to have involved the hydropower turbines. (Wanapum Dam photo here.) The part of the dam that has failed is called an ogee, which is a big concrete bump on the upstream higher elevation portion of the dam over which water has to flow.  The ogee has a 2-inch wide crack across its full underwater face.

The greater concern is that the entire ogee (depiction here) has slipped causing the utility vehicle access road atop the dam to bulge (see: “Outside Experts Weigh in on Columbia River’s Damaged Wanapum Dam,” Northwest News Network, March 5, 2014). The major regional risk is that Wanapum Dam’s hydropower facilities are so large that the Grant County PUD would have to start to buy power to meet any contractual obligations.  California’s Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) buys power from the Grant County PUD Wanapum Dam.

Running Hydro with Wind Cracks Dam Foundations

A 2013 Swedish study (“Cracking in the Concrete Foundation of Hydropower Generators”) identified “stops and starts” of hydropower plants as a cause of foundation cracks:

Experience from earlier reports in this field has indicated that cracks may occur at the points where loads from the unit are transferred into the concrete structure. These cracks may be caused by incorrect design of the foundations, incorrect estimation of design loads, mechanical connections in the supporting structure failing to perform the function for which they were designed, or incorrect maintenance of components leading to increased load levels.

If the unit’s operating modes are changed, this also impacts upon the loads occurring in the unit and affects the surrounding structure (i.e. more starts and stops, more power regulations, operation outside the best efficiency range with changes in load levels).

The report concluded:

During inspection, cracks were discovered in the concrete foundation, near the stator and rotor spider supports, at some hydropower stations in Sweden. The cracks were believed to be related to new patterns for generator operation, thereby changing the dynamic loading of the stator and rotor spider supports. Previously the generators ran continuously, while nowadays there are an increased number of stops and starts, sometimes even several times during one day.

Increased dynamic forces due to runaways, and also other dynamic events such as emergency stops, may also contribute to increased stress levels and cracking of the foundation. Furthermore, although extreme loads such as short circuits of the generator seldom occurs, the influence on the dynamic forces acting on the supporting structure and concrete foundation may be strongly influenced during such events.

Sweden both generates and imports a substantial amount of its electricity from wind farms (see “Windpower in Sweden,” Wikipedia).  Unpredictable wind power is thus a source of the “stops and starts” of Swedish hydropower plants serving as backup electricity when the wind stops blowing.  A Nov. 30, 2010 article in the New York Times (“Integrating Wind and Water Power, an Increasingly Tough Balancing Act”) reported that the hydropower providers were coming to the end of the ability to use hydroelectric for system balancing and peaker power because of too much penetration of wind power in the electric grid.

Steve Weiss, an environmental advocate, is quoted: “Hydro sounds like it’s a great fit for wind, but in turns out to be a pretty terrible fit.”

Ideally, hydropower is the best fit with stop-and-go wind power because of its very quick start up time.  But in the real world of structural and power engineering it doesn’t work out that way. If both the river is high and there are high winds, grid operators have to manage a situation of excess power. An ongoing conflict between wind farm operators and the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA’s) has been raging for some time over BPA’s policy of dumping wind power, euphemistically called “curtailment.”

BPA grid operators have not found a way to bring unpredictable and sporadic wind power into the grid especially when rivers are full and hydropower is at peak generation. (see online: “Water On, Wind Off? Generator Curtailment in the Pacific Northwest,” American Bar Association “Trends” newsletter on the environment, energy and resources, November-December, 2013).

The failure of integrating wind and hydropower has resulted in a so-called Smart Grid demonstration project by BPA (see: “The Growing Case for Building a Smart Grid to Supplement Alternative Energy Development,” Examiner.com, Aug. 10, 2010, online).  Part of this pilot project entails the electric grid operator taking over the on and off controls of home water heaters with smart meters in order to store excess power as heat.

Wind and Water Power Don’t Mix

Another problem is that ramping hydroelectric power turbines fast and slow to back up erratic wind power puts a strain on the hydropower plants by wearing out equipment faster and resulting in foundation cracks as reported by the above-cited Swedish study. Hydropower and wind power have ended up not to be compatible. About half of the wind power generated in the Pacific Northwest is purchased by California. After the first report of the crack in Wanapum Dam, Grant County PUD officials clarified on March 4 that the crack involved a spillway on the western face of the dam and not one of the spillways running through a turbine in the powerhouse.

Since 2004, Grant County PUD has been replacing the 10 hydroelectric turbines located in the powerhouse of the dam, which will be completed in 2018.  Wanapum Dam was built in 1959. By comparison the four huge hydroelectric turbines on Parker Dam along the southerly reach of the Colorado River have never been replaced since 1934, although they have been rehabilitated and the controls have been digitized.  The Parker Dam hydro turbines are used to generate constant power to pump water to Southern California and are not operated as peaker plants to back up erratic wind power plants.

Grant County PUD says the reasons for replacement of its turbines is that they are at the end of their useful life and new turbines are necessary to reduce harm to salmon. However, the major technical reason cited by Grant County PUD for replacement of the turbines is “The generator experienced severe stator winding failures due to frequent thermal cycling and operation at high loads” ((see “Wanapum Generator Turbine & Generator Upgrades, July 22, 2008, Board-Meetings08-GCPUD Presentation (07.22.08). (1). pdf).

The 2013 Swedish study cited earlier stated the reasons for foundation cracks at some hydropower stations “were believed to be related to the function of the stator supports and to new patterns of generator operation… [due to] many stops and starts [of the generator].” (A stator is the stationary portion of an electric generator or motor.)

A week after the Wanapum Dam crack was identified and announced to the media, it is apparent that the foundation crack in a spillway gate is not physically related to any turbine vibration or resonation. That is because the spillways and the turbine powerhouse are separate facilities on the dam. This doesn’t negate the Swedish study cited earlier that the physical integrity of hydroelectric facilities are being compromised by the reckless integration of wind and hydropower.

Need Answers on Wanapum Dam, San Onofre Nuke Plant Failures

The Wanapum Dam foundation spillway crack and the cracking of steam tubes in the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station in Southern California are not directly related. However, nuclear scientist James Conca inferred that the cracks of steam tubes at San Onofre were related to operating at high levels of generation.  Conca states that San Onofre did not need to be shut down if it was merely operated at 20% less output:  “All we had to do was decrease one reactor’s output by 20 percent to solve the problem, which would have dropped total output of San Onofre by 8 percent” (see: “Scientist Says No Reason to Shut Down San Onofre Nuke Plant,” Calwatchdog.com, Jan. 3, 2014, online).

Testimony before Congress asserted San Onofre was being run as a backup peaker plant to handle the vagaries of green power (see: “LTR-13-0346 – Vinod Arora Email re: San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station,” online). 

The cost to Southern California electric ratepayers of attempting to integrate green power into the grid: $4.1 billion (see: “Decommissioning San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station,” SongsCommunity.com). The public has a right to answers to some questions.  To what degree has the apparently reckless policy of integrating wind energy into power grids caused the need to replace hydroelectric power plant turbines and shut down nuclear facilities resulting in huge decommissioning costs on ratepayers, and avoidable risks on bondholders?  What ramifications might this have on the bond market if bond raters foresee more failure of conventional energy facilities?

The public deserves greater transparency and accountability about whether the replacement of hydropower turbines at Wanapum and the cracked steam tubes at San Onofre are the result of the reckless policy to integrate green power into the western regional electric grid.  The cost to decommission the San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant is estimated to be $4.1 billion.  The cost to replace ten hydroelectric power turbines at Wanapum Dam is $300 million. To answer the question of the lead headline of this article: Is the Wanapum Dam crack due to an “unpredicted change in the wind?”

The apparent direct answer is no. But there is another indirect answer blowing in the wind. The crack in a spillway of the dam has brought attention to the fact that the mandated integration of wind power into hydroelectric and nuclear powered electric grids is plausibly resulting in the costly replacement of hydropower turbines that show up in higher hydroelectricity rates and huge decommissioning costs for nuclear power plants. In 1962 pop musician Bob Dylan released his song “Blowin’ in the Wind,” with its memorable refrain: “the answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind.”  

In other words, even though the reason the wind blows is intangible, the answer is so obvious it is right in your face.  And the reason that hydropower dams in Sweden are cracking, and hydroelectric turbines are possibly having to be prematurely replaced in the U.S., and nuclear power plants retrofitted as peaker plants to back up erratic wind power have experienced mechanical failures, is indeed “blowin’ in the wind.”

TexasWorld: Freedom, Room for All (a mental experiment)

To illustrate that the world is not in any meaningful way overpopulated, Julian Simon noted that if everyone in the world moved to Texas, each person would still have about 1,800 square feet of living space. Enough room for a family of four to live in an average size house with a front and back yard.

Since Simon made these calculations in The Ultimate Resource 2, the world’s population has grown. Recalculating for a world of 6 billion is 1,500 square feet per person, which still leaves 6,000 square feet for a family of four (a still comfortable 60- by-100-foot lot, with plenty of space for multiple story living).

But what about the roads, parks, lakes, shopping malls, my students ask? If I say everyone in the world could live in Texas, they want to know about the amenities. Yes, the free-market system has an astonishing ability to respond to the unexpected, from everyday shifts in demand to hurricanes and other disasters. But if everyone moved to Texas, could markets coordinate the efforts and ingenuity of millions of entrepreneurs and businessmen in building the necessary infrastructure, homes, apartments, etc.?

Markets provide the information about relative scarcity and prices provide the incentives for millions or billions of people to coordinate their responses. F. A. Hayek’s seminal article, “The Use of Knowledge in Society,” uses a disaster to tell its story of the power of prices and market. It starts with a flood in a copper mine in Chile.

So the importance of explaining how markets help society deal with emergencies is to help inoculate people against government “emergency measures” the next time a disaster strikes.

Immigration

A separate reason why this kind of thought experiment is useful follows from the distortions caused by decades of interventionist immigration policies in America and around the world. When libertarians argue for open immigration and for the U.S. to remove immigration barriers, a difficult issue is the practical one of adjustment from the status quo to a free system.

People respond to calls for ending U.S. immigration restrictions by saying that if we opened the borders now, millions of immigrants would flood in from Mexico and South America, and tens of millions might quickly travel here from China and India. How could markets handle that?

Well, that many wouldn’t “flood” in, but if they did markets would adjust, and most people, Americans as well as others around the world, would be better off for it. The point of economic analysis and population-oriented thought experiments is to illustrate why and how.

Interventionism

Another reason to spend time with futuristic scenarios is to promote understanding of the optimistic perspective on technology, on market economies and on people. Most of the problems people associate with “over” population or population growth are really problem caused by the lack of the rule of law, clearly defined property rights, and enforceable contracts.

Problems in New York City like high rents and a shortage of housing have their origin in long-standing rent controls, housing regulations, and other government interventions that restrict new housing. Traffic congestion and a creaky, cranky transit system is caused by government’s mismanaged monopoly roads and mass transit. So the main congestion problems of daily life in New York City would be solved with private property, enforceable contracts and open markets.

Back to Texas

The problems of daily life in west Texas are not so easily solved. West Texas has lots empty land–empty of people. Even the cattle are lonely. Across tens of thousands of square miles of often beautiful scenery, are few cities and towns. West Texas cities like Lubbock, Amarillo, San Angelo and Midland are like oases in the desert.

Texas was a better place in 2010 with 25 million people than in 2000 with 21 million people, or 1980 with 14.2 million or 1960 with 9.6 million or 1900 with 3 million. I simply argue Texas would be a better place still in 2015 with 6 billion people living free and living large.

I’ve visited Aix-en-Provence in the south of France for Summer University and Institute for Economic Studies-Europe seminars for college students. The city is beautiful and densely populated. Narrow cobblestone roads run between six- to eight-story apartment buildings, most with shops on street level. The main street through town, a marvelous wide boulevard feature fountains and endless cafes.

If I were building a housing development and tourist attraction in Texas, I would invite thousands of stone masons and other construction workers to build this part of paradise in a freer state in a for-now freer country.

In Texas, freedom is a stronger tradition than in most of the country. For one thing the federal government owns very little land in Texas, unlike the rest of the country and especially the west were the federal government owns 50% of the land. Texas came into the union as a sovereign state, so most land stayed or became private property.

Viva Las Vegas

Have you been to Las Vegas lately? It is not just a place for gambling. It is becoming a place for tourists as well. Perhaps Las Vegas looked at a map of the U.S. twenty years ago, noticed many Indian reservations, and expected stiff competition for future gamblers.

But Las Vegas seems like an odd place for a tourist destination, unless you have never seen a desert before. The nearby mountains are beautiful at sunrise and sunset. But like Aix-en-Provence, the tourist attraction is not the countryside, it is the city and it’s buildings and shops and boulevards and people.

Las Vegas now has buildings and shops and boulevards to attract tourists. You can visit Venice, Paris, New York, Ancient Egypt and Rome. In the Venetian you can ride in a gondola to the piazza and sit “outside” in the cool midday air sipping cappuccino. P.J. O’Rourke says it has everything Venice does, except the stink.

The Paris Casino has a mini-Eiffel Tower great breads from French pastry shops and buffets of fine French foods. Many of the workers are from French-speaking Romania however, so lack the skill of delivering an authentic French insult.

So I would try to impress upon the Texas government the brilliance of this strategy of inviting the world’s great cities to relocate to Texas.

First we would have to assure investors that Texas would have the population to fill millions, even billions of new homes and apartments. And for that Texas could apply, as Iowa has, for a waiver from federal immigration restrictions. Iowa’s population dropped nearly 5% from 1980 to 1990. Restrictive immigration policies have contributed to the reduced population in hundreds of Midwestern cities and towns. So Iowa and many other less-populated cities, including many in update New York are trying to attract more immigrants.

In Texas we would need hundreds of billions of dollars in housing construction and infrastructure in order to accommodate billions of new immigrants. The good news is that there are hundreds of millions of really poor people in the world who are looking for work. They don’t know it maybe, but they are really looking for freedom, and looking for freedom to work in all the wrong places. They should look in Texas. They should have cards that read “Have Poverty; Will Travel.”

So new Texas World cities could be constructed with world labor. Texas is a big enough place, and with enough coastline, I would recommend establishing Charter Cities and Startup Cities along the Texas coast. New port city to compete with Galveston and Houston. The new charters could be based on those that have worked so well for Hong Kong and Singapore, still among the freest city in the world. Let Hong Kong investors finance this new city and port. And they could easily find millions of people to begin construction.

In fact, construction could be financed in part by the impoverished Chinese immigrants themselves. In 2000 the going rate for getting to New York illegally from China was around $40,000. Offer Texas citizenship to anyone investing $40,000 in this new Hong Kong, Texas. Ten million Chinese immigrants would bring 400 billion investment dollars to Texas. That should be enough to get things started.

Of course, most impoverished Chinese people don’t have $40,000. They borrow it confident they will be able to find work in New York City and other thriving U.S. cities, save enough in a few years to pay back their transport creditors.

In and around new Texas Startup Cities would be factories and farms providing jobs and food. Elsewhere in Texas would be New Bombay and New New Delhi, maybe along new hi-tech corridors like I-35 between Austin and San Antonio. Millions of highly educated and English-speaking people from India would bring inexpensive programming skills as well as hundreds of other skills to Texas (while their parents run the motels).

Americans have long liked to believe they are a special people, somehow uniquely capable and deserving of the stunning wealth created and enjoyed in America. But it is liberty that is unique to America and the western world of the last couple hundred years. Rose Wilder Lane tries to describe this astonishing force of nature, the power of free people in the beginning of her book, The Discovery of Freedom:

China to Texas

One of the interesting things about TexasWorld is the boost in worldwide growth rates that Texas freedom could ignite. Academics and commentators get excited when they average growth rates in China of 7% or 8%. But every Chinese immigrant to the U.S. enjoys an individual economic growth rate of maybe 1000% the first year: from $100 a month income to $1,000 and then maybe another 100% the second year to $2,000 a month.

Chinese people moving to the U.S. can be a more effective a way to boost prosperity and economic development than shipping capital to China.

Perhaps the greatest loss of human prosperity over the sixty years was the billion Chinese locked up in China under communist rule. How many billions of hours of creative human endeavor were lost? How many hundreds of millions of lifetimes of business achievement and entrepreneurship lost? How many tens of millions of lifetimes stolen from engineering development, medical research and scientific discovery? We should reflect not only on how miserably these billion plus Chinese people have lived under Communist rule but also how much the world lost when these minds and bodies were mostly isolated from the world.

China could have easily followed the course of Singapore in 1950. The president of Singapore was also a communist, but he inadvertently deregulated the Singapore economy and discovered the benefits of markets. Chinese in China could have had the same per capita income as Chinese in Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

This gives us a sense of what would result from liberating hundreds of millions of Chinese not over the next decades as China hopefully liberalizes, but over next two or three years with entrepreneurial Chinese people living free in Texas.

The first generation of hard labor and long hours can offer their children (plural!) advanced educations as engineers, research scientists and entrepreneurs. (Everyone time I chatted with workers in Chinese restaurants when I lived in Houston, they were working on engineering degrees at area colleges.)

Conclusion

TexasWorld is a mental experiment of how one great free state can take on the world for fun and profit. 

If Las Vegas can do it, Texas can. If China cannot do it, Texas can.

House Fire Investigation - Cause Electrical

NEWPORT, Ky. — July 28, 2013 - A house fire caused 100,000 dollars in damage and leaves residents without a place to stay.
Seven adults and one baby lived at the home that caught fire this afternoon in the 800 block of Roberts Street in Newport.
Newport Fire Department Capt., Randy Childress said the fire broke out around 2 p.m. One of the residents said he was sleeping when he smelled the smoke. "I look in the room in the back and smoke started coming in the door and I broke the door to make sure no one was over there and the building is on fire and that's all I really know,” said Gustavo Ramos. Ramos said fortunately no one was in the building.
Childress said the fire started on the first floor and quickly spread to the second and third floors of the home, “After he left the door open, that allowed it to spread so if there's a lesson learned for the public is if you do see a fire shut the door,” said Childress. As for Ramos he said he wasn’t able to grab anything on his way out after making sure no one else was in the burning home, “I don't have a lot of clothes and stuff and I cook and I have my knives and I lost everything.”
Childress said the home appeared to be a total loss with the fire and smoke damage. He said the cause of the fire appeared to be electrical and started in the outlet running the air conditioner. Picture 19 300x276 House Fire Investigation   Cause Electrical
It took crews thirty minutes to knock down the flames, and because of the heat extra companies were called in from the Bellevue-Dayton, Fort Thomas, Covington and Southgate fire departments.
No injuries were reported and Red Cross is assisting the residents displaced.

Wind Generation is the Future Renewable Type of Energy

The future of power generation is going to be greatly influenced by the Wind.Wind is the Types of Renewable Energy that uses a wind turbine to generate the electricity. By the end of 2009 wind generation accounted for the generation of 159.2 gigawatts, which is about 2% of the worlds electricity required. Going forward wind generation has the technical potential to produce 40 times it current electricity generation.

 

There is a wide range of wind turbines available for many suppliers and they fall into two categories just like most other things around the world.  There is a range of domestic wind generators ranging from 100 watts up to 1 Kilowatt and a much wider range of commercial units that range from 600 Kilowatts to 5 Megawatts however wind turbines with the rated output of 1.5 to 3 Megawatts are most commonly used in the commercial wind farms around the world.

 

Regardless of the rated output wind turbines use exactly the same method to generate an electricity supply. Basically they use they do exactly opposite to an electric motor. An electric motor uses a supply of electricity to energize a coil of wire (the armature) that is contained in a magnetic field this causes the armature to turn therefore supplies a source of mechanical energy. Now a wind turbine on the other hand takes it energy source from the wind and using the blades to mechanically turn the armature within the magnetic field. This movement within the magnetic field induces an electrical current in the windings, which can be used to feed into the main power grid or into a battery bank in the case of a stand-alone system.

 

The rate of electricity generated is proportional to the speed at which the turbine turns. Before installing a wind generator you need to do some research into whether or not the location that you live in is suitable. You need to have what as known as clean wind meaning that there is no interference to the flow of wind into the generator like trees mountains builds etc. It is also a good idea to install some wind monitoring equipment and study the amount of wind you can actually take advantage of. You may find that your location is not suitable for a wind generator and you may need to look at other types of renewable energy like Solar Panels.

 

 

The use of wind generators for the creation of electricity is growing across the globe by a staggering rate of 30% per year. 11 Ways to Save on Energy Costs During Winter in Florida

We all know how unpredictable Florida’s winter weather can be—one day it might be cool, breezy and in the low sixties and, before you know it, you’re at the beach frolicking in the sun and sand. Ultimately, varying temperatures can make it difficult for you to say money. But don’t forget to take advantage of the cooler temps!

Listed below are a few quick, simple and effective ways to help you gain control over your energy usage and save on electrical costs in your home—even as the weather regularly switches from hot to cold.

  1. Cool your home at 78 degrees or warmer with the thermostat fan switched to auto. For additional savings, raise your thermostat to 82 degrees or warmer when you’re not home.
  2. Turn off your air conditioning unit and open your windows when the outside temperatures drop down to the low 70s and upper 60s. Take advantage of Florida’s cool—but not too cool—winter days and nights!
  3. Heat your home at about 60 degrees or cooler with the thermostat fan switched to auto. To save even more, turn your heater off when you’re away from home.
  4. Reduce your water heater temperature from 140 degrees to 120 degrees. This is the recommended temperature setting according to the U.S. Department of Energy and can save you about $7 each month.
  5. Clean or replace your air conditioning filter regularly to help your unit run more efficiently while significantly trimming cooling costs.
  6. Turn off your ceiling fan when you leave a room. A fan that runs all the time costs up to $7 a month!
  7. Use your dishwasher to conserve energy. Avoid pre-rinsing dishes and see savings up to $70 a year. Run your dishwasher at night, when the temperatures are a little cooler, to avoid heating up your house when it’s already warm outside.
  8. Limit the time you run your pool pump. During the summer, it’s recommended to keep it on for about six hours a day while it’ll only need to run for about four hours a day during the winter months.
  9. Adjust the water level on your washing machine to match the load size—especially when using hot water.
  10. Clean the lint filter in your dryer before every load to dry your clothes faster. Again, try to only run your dryer when you’re not worried about heating up your home.
  11. Use the auto sensor function on your dryer to conserve energy. This will prevent you from over-drying your clothes.
