When to Replace Smoke Alarms

 When to Replace Smoke Alarms  In the January-February edition of the NFPA Journal, a publication of the National Fire Protection Association - The Authority on Fire, Electrical & Building Safety, writer Amy Lebeau wrote an article entitled "Close to Home - A friends near miss, and a viral challenge to improve smoke-alarm awareness".   In Amy's NFPA article she tells a story of her friend Brook, who recently had a serious fire in her home. And Brook's 2 children smelled the smoke first and got their mom, grandmother and their baby brother out of the house.   The scarier part, was that when Amy heard Brook tell the story, Amy asked Brook if she heard smoke detectors go off in the home, and Brook said, "no". Amy goes on to say that Brook and her husband thought they had adequate coverage with smoke detectors all over the house, in the necessary spots. What they didn't realize is that they did not work.   Smoke detectors need to be changed at minimum every 10 years. A smoke alarms ability to detect smoke becomes less reliable over the years, making it more likely that it won't respond when its needed most!   Amy Lebeau then polled her friends to see if any of them knew about smoke detectors life span of 10 years. None of them did, they were all over the map.   Amy suggests the following. 1. Know the importance of testing your smoke alarms monthly. 2. Have an interconnected smoke alarm system in the home, meaning if one detector alarms the presence of smoke, they all alarm. 3. Have both ionization and photo-electric type smoke alarms, this means having two different detection methods for redundancy and accuracy. 4. Replace them every 10 years minimum. 5. Space weather: another reason to go solar, distribute the grid widely

Coronal Mass Ejections (CME’s) originate in our sun and have the power to cripple our centralized electrical distribution system with less than 24 hours’ warning. If we experienced an event today similar to what earth did in 1859, when billions of tons of ionized particles oriented in a magnetic wave that aligned with earth bombarded our atmosphere and collapsed earth’s own magnetic field, then our electrical distribution system could be completely out for weeks and take years to fully rebuild — assuming the outage did not cascade a social chaos of riots, looting and other disruptions that would compound the simple shortage of high-power transformers lost in the solar storm.

In 2013, we are at ‘solar maximum’ a peak moment in the sun’s rotating electromagnetic field dynamics that generates many times the longterm average number of CME’s. The sun’s historical period from maximum to minimum CME’s runs about nine years, so even if investment in distributed energy doesn’t save us from a damaging event this maximum, a typical solar Photovoltaics or wind power installation will be around for several maximums, and the local micro-infrastructure for such installations will support the next generation of PV modules and wind turbines.

While the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and other government agencies and industrial powers push massive grid upgrades to move power from centralized energy sources — typically coal and nuclear, although increasingly from wind farms located remote from population centers — recent breakthroughs in understanding the sub-surface dynamics of our sun should prompt a deep reconsideration of any electrical distribution investments other than distributed renewables like micro wind turbines and small solar, and possibly alternative energy such as micro combined heat-and-power systems fueled by natural gas (urban) or methane from trash or manure (rural).

Lighting 101: Compact Fluorescent Bulbs (CFLs)

When looking into lowering your electricity costs, a popular option is to switch all of the light bulbs in your home or office to compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs. Switching to CFLs couldn’t be easier, but it’s not uncommon to wonder: are these bulbs really more efficient than regular incandescent bulbs?

The answer is simple: yes!

Here are some facts about CFLs, according to ENERGY STAR:

  • They use 75% less energy than standard bulbs.
  • They can last for more than 3,000! Compare that to the average 1,000 hours for a standard light bulb.
  • They can create less than 75% less heat than regular bulbs. This means, when you keep your lights on for a long period of time, your house won’t heat up!
  • They can help lower your overall electricity usage and utilities.

The Science Behind CFLs

Creating light by running electricity through a resistive filament, incandescent light bulbs heat the filament to a very high temperature. This causes the bulb to glow and produce an extremely visible light, however more than 98 percent of the energy used is emitted as heat.

On the other hand, CFL bulbs produce ultraviolet light, working by passing electricity through a mercury vapor, exciting the gas. As the UV light hits the white coating inside of the CFL bulb, the coating changes into a light that you can see. CFL bulbs don’t use heat to create light.

Lumens Per Watt

A regular incandescent bulb can produce about 15 lumens per watt while CFL bulbs typically produce 50 to 70 lumens per watt. In other words, you can buy a 15-watt CFL bulb that produces the same about of light as a regular 60-watt regular incandescent bulb.

General Cost and Lifespan

A 6-pack of GE 60-watt incandescent light bulbs costs approximately $4 while a 2-pack of GE 15-watt CFL bulbs (equivalent to a 60-watt regular incandescent bulb) costs approximately $13. While it’s clearly obvious that regular incandescent bulbs are inexpensive, the typical lifespan is around 1,000 hours versus an average lifespan ranging between 1,200 to 20,000 hours for CFL bulbs.

Savings

Using 2/3 less energy than a regular incandescent light bulb and lasting up to 10 times as longer, replacing your average 60-watt regular incandescent bulb with a 15-watt CFL can save you at least $30 in energy costs over the lifespan of the bulb. On average, you’ll save approximately $6 per year per bulb.

Glendale Surge Protection Will Keep You Grounded

Increasingly, Glendale residents find themselves more and more dependent on electrical devices in this modern world. Our DVD players, gaming systems, microwaves and of course our computers are important to our quality of life and communication with our family, friends and in some cases, work contacts.

What is an electrical surge or spike?

Wind Power Unclothed: ‘Economics in One Lesson’ Applied (Hazlitt in 1946 versus AWEA today)

“Economics is haunted by more fallacies than any other study known to man. This is no accident. The inherent difficulties of the subject would be great enough in any case, but they are multiplied a thousand fold by a factor that is insignificant in, say, physics, mathematics or medicine – the special pleading of selfish interests.”

- Henry Hazlitt, Economics in One Lesson (1946)

A year ago, the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) was desperately fighting against the scheduled expiration of its most prized federal subsidy, the wind production tax credit (PTC). As I wrote at that time, AWEA’s argument–please government, keep our activity going for job creation and other economic gain–rested on a basic, long-debunked fallacy of economics.

AWEA believes that wind’s ”is” equals ”ought”–that recorded activity is a per se good. But there is an opportunity cost of action–what is not seen but known to exist from the economic law of scarcity.

Wind interests conclude that resources expended by them come from thin air rather than from the productive sector (taxpayers, ratepayers). Resources that do not go to wind, in other words, are resources lost to the economy as a whole.

This is wrong. A free-market redirection of resources away from wind power would free land, labor, and capital (the factors of production) for goods and services as determined by consumers, not government.

Henry Hazlitt explained as much in Economics in One Lesson, first published in 1946. It builds on Frederic Bastiat’s 1848 essay What Is Seen and What Is Not Seen. The wisdom in Hazlitt’s book is so sound and relevant that it bears repeating for the energy-policy debate today.

To this end, I again bring to your attention how the wind industry can be substituted for Hazlitt’s “X” industry in Chapter 14, ”Saving the X Industry” to completely refute AWEA’s central argument.

The lobbies of Congress are crowded with representatives of the Wind industry. The Wind industry is sick. The Wind industry is dying. It must be saved. It can be saved only by a tariff, by higher prices, or by a subsidy. If it is allowed to die, workers will be thrown on the streets. Their landlords, grocers, butchers, clothing stores and local motion picture theaters will lose business, and depression will spread in ever-widening circles. But if the Wind industry, by prompt action of Congress, is saved – then it will buy equipment from other industries; more men will be employed; they will give more business to the butchers, bakers and neon-light makers, and then it is prosperity that will spread in ever-widening circles.

Keep in mind that the wind industry has been on some form of life support since 1978, and on the same tax-credit subsidy since 1992. Last year, a spokesperson for AWEA stated in a press release:

American manufacturing jobs are coming back, with tens of thousands of new jobs from wind power… But these jobs could vanish if Congress allows the Production Tax Credit to expire, in effect enacting a targeted tax increase, and sending our jobs to foreign countries. Congress must act now to keep this American manufacturing success story going.

And again:

Failure to extend the PTC would cost 37,000 jobs immediately, and put the brakes on the progress America has made to diversity its electricity portfolio.

Unfortunately, Congress did extend the PTC another year. But AWEA is not content with last year’s fleecing, as it continues to lobby for another extension and name-call any organization that speaks out against it. Recently, AWEA responded to an Institute for Energy Research study on the distributional effects of the PTC (full disclosure: I was co-author) with the same economic fallacies. Among AWEA’s mix of personal attack, political spin, and economic fallacy, AWEA wrote:

American wind power supports 80,000 full-time jobs and according to a Department of Energy analysis, with the right policies in place, wind power could support 500,000 full-time domestic jobs by 2030.

Lucky for us, Hazlitt already refuted AWEA along with all the other political favor-seekers — all we have to do is fill in the blanks:

[A direct subsidy] would be nothing more than a transfer of wealth or income to the Wind industry. The taxpayers would lose precisely as much as the people in the Wind industry gained…

It is obvious in the case of a subsidy that the taxpayers must lose precisely as much as the Wind industry gains. It should be equally clear that, as a consequence, other industries must lose what the Wind industry gains. They must pay part of the taxes that are used to support the Wind industry. And consumers, because they are taxed to support the Wind industry, will have that much less income left with which to buy other things. The result must be that other industries on the average must be smaller than otherwise in order that the Wind industry may be larger.

But the result of this subsidy is not merely that there has been a transfer of wealth or income, or that other industries have shrunk in the aggregate as much as the Wind industry has expanded.

The result is also (and this is where the net loss comes in to the nation considered as a unit) that capital and labor are driven out of industries in which they are more efficiently employed to be diverted to an industry in which they are less efficiently employed. Less wealth is created. The average standard of living is lowered compared with what it would have been. These results are virtually inherent, in fact, in the very arguments put forward to subsidize the Wind industry. The Wind industry is shrinking or dying by the contention of its friends. Why, it may be asked, should it be kept alive by artificial respiration?

These arguments from 1946 certainly applied to AWEA in 2012/13, and will always apply to crony industries. Economics in One Lesson is a book that belongs on every thinking person’s bookshelf, including those at trade associations who forget that the opportunity cost of cronyism leaves the economy poorer, not richer.

Micro-Hydro: The Regulatory Noose (Logan City vs. FERC)

“[A] complex regulatory nexus surrounds all hydropower projects, no matter how small. As far as regulatory requirements are concerned, it didn’t matter that the project would have little to no environmental impacts…. When it comes to renewable energy, federal policies are working at odds with one another.”

In 2008 Logan City, Utah decided to install a micro-hydro project in its culinary water system. The city’s assistant engineer recognized the opportunity to generate clean, low-cost electricity for the city by installing a turbine in the city’s culinary water pipeline.

Logan City’s project would power 185 homes, and would not require any new construction. At the same time, it would also help reduce excess water pressure in the system. Because the project was so small, and would not affect anything outside of an existing pipeline, city officials thought the permitting process would be a breeze.

What started as a simple plan to install a micro-hydro facility soon became really complex. As Logan City officials learned firsthand, the permitting process required by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), proved to be so lengthy and expensive that the difficulties associated with the process far outweighed the benefits.

As a result, Logan City is not keen to start any new projects of a similar size or scope. This research was recently published as a working paper with the Mercatus Center at George Mason University.

Rare Renewable Viability

Micro-hydropower is basically small-scale hydropower with little to no environmental impacts. Although large dams often get in the way of people, wildlife, and habitat, micro-hydro technology doesn’t require a dam at all.

Wherever water is flowing downhill, through a pipeline or canal, a turbine can be placed into the water and hooked up to a generator. As easy as that you can be generating electricity with zero emissions. What’s more, micro-hydro systems are more efficient than any other type of electricity generation. Once installed, maintenance costs are low.

Although micro-hydropower projects are individually small, the technology’s collective potential is significant. If developed, small and micro-hydropower projects, categorized as 30 megawatts (MW) or less, could power tens of thousands of homes across the U.S., which would double total hydropower generation in the U.S.

Working with FERC

As project managers in Logan City learned firsthand, a complex regulatory nexus surrounds all hydropower projects, no matter how small. As far as regulatory requirements are concerned, it didn’t matter that the project would have little to no environmental impacts.

The city still had to go through an intensive permitting process overseen by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). Logan City’s project began in 2008. By 2012 the city’s project had finally been completed after four years of delays and almost 3 million dollars of total costs.

FERC is the federal agency responsible for issuing licenses and permits for the construction, operation, and maintenance of hydropower plants, as mandated by the Federal Power Act. The licensing process can be long and costly. To create a new project, developers may need to obtain permits from as many as twenty-five different regulatory agencies.

This lengthy regulatory process reduces the desirability of micro-hydropower as a potential energy source, because it often produces too little to compensate for the costs of complying.

Irrelevant Requirements

The list of irrelevant regulatory requirements Logan City was required to meet is a lengthy one. FERC is responsible for making sure all hydropower permit applicants meet the requirements of the Endangered Species Act, National Historic Preservation Act, the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the National Environmental Policy Act, just to name a few.

Although large hydropower projects may actually have environmental impacts that are worth documenting, Logan City’s project would not affect anything outside of an existing building built three years prior.

Despite this fact, the city was still required to complete an endangered species analysis and to prove the project would not affect any historic structures. The city’s assistant engineer told us, “There was no common sense” in the permitting requirements.

Green Energy vs. Green Regulation

The $787 billion stimulus package of 2009 included funding for the encouragement of renewable energy sources like hydropower, and Logan’s project fit the bill. Logan City secured a federal grant for $700,000 that helped fund its micro-hydro project.

Ironically, the same stimulus money meant to boost renewable energy added even more stringent regulatory requirements to the list. The stimulus included a “Buy American” stipulation that required every single part used be manufactured in the U.S. This requirement drove up costs even further by eliminating competition from foreign manufacturers.

With each unnecessary regulation that had to be met, costs went up. Logan City had to hire experts to help them prepare complicated environmental analyses, and city employees spent many additional hours meeting regulatory requirements.

Because of this, city officials estimate the project will not break even for 50 years. The city’s assistant engineer told us Logan City will never again do a project of a similar size or scope because,

The cost of the permitting headache and the nightmare and the frustration of the project…. It’s not even capital cost that deters you, it’s the regulatory compliance cost.

Unintended Consequences: Green Energy Loses

When it comes to renewable energy, federal policies are working at odds with one another. On the one hand, federal policies are providing funding for renewable energy projects like micro-hydro. On the other hand, regulations designed to help protect the environment are making small, environmentally friendly projects economically impossible.

As Logan’s assistant engineer told us, “In other countries a project like this would have been considered a gold mine…It’s low maintenance, it’s reliable, it’s proven technology.”

The reality is, federal regulations are stopping smart, green projects like Logan City’s from ever getting off the ground. Cities like Afton, Wyoming and Barre City, Vermont have run into similar regulatory barriers to developing their micro-hydro potential.

These small cities learned, as did Logan City, that just because a regulation is meant to protect the environment does not mean it will actually accomplish that goal. As long as small, low-impact projects are regulated to the same level as large dams, renewable energy development will continue to be strangled.

Poly Tarpaulins And Their Many Uses

Poly tarpaulins are made from a multi-mesh fabric that is coated with polyethylene sheets and comes in a variety of mil and mesh counts. They come in a choice of sizes and are used for many difference purposes. They are waterproof and rot resistant making them a handy item to have around.

The thickness of the tarp is what is referred to as mils. A mil is equal to . 001 or 1/1000 of an inch. The larger the number the thicker the tarp. Most tarps are 6 mils but they can come in as many as 12 to 23 mils thick if using for a canopy. Mesh count is the number of threads per inch. A 10 by 10 mesh count would have 10 threads per inch in both directions.

Sold in either precut sizes or by the roll the poly tarpaulin will come with either brass, aluminum or metal grommets. These are used to attach the tarp to a whatever it is that you are covering. The spacing can vary from 18 to 36 inches. The shorter spacing will add strength and minimize movement and tearing.

On each corner of the tarp is a reinforcing triangular plastic cover to prevent the grommets from tearing through the fabric. Corners are more prone to tension especially in high winds. A rope is sewn into the hem of the tarp to add further strength.

Used in a variety of ways the poly tarpaulin is used to cover roofs in remodels or when a leak is discovered. They are great in hurricane weather conditions to protect structures and belongings. They make great canopies to provide shelter or shade. Many different types of materials are covered with them like hay, lumber and gym floors.

Commonly treated to provide UV protection from the sun, they resist mildew and rot. They perform well in freezing temperature conditions. The silver or grey color tarps contain an additional sun blocking layer. These colors also provide total shade and protection from the elements.

Wind Generation is the Future Renewable Type of Energy

The future of power generation is going to be greatly influenced by the Wind.Wind is the Types of Renewable Energy that uses a wind turbine to generate the electricity. By the end of 2009 wind generation accounted for the generation of 159.2 gigawatts, which is about 2% of the worlds electricity required. Going forward wind generation has the technical potential to produce 40 times it current electricity generation.

 

There is a wide range of wind turbines available for many suppliers and they fall into two categories just like most other things around the world.  There is a range of domestic wind generators ranging from 100 watts up to 1 Kilowatt and a much wider range of commercial units that range from 600 Kilowatts to 5 Megawatts however wind turbines with the rated output of 1.5 to 3 Megawatts are most commonly used in the commercial wind farms around the world.

 

Regardless of the rated output wind turbines use exactly the same method to generate an electricity supply. Basically they use they do exactly opposite to an electric motor. An electric motor uses a supply of electricity to energize a coil of wire (the armature) that is contained in a magnetic field this causes the armature to turn therefore supplies a source of mechanical energy. Now a wind turbine on the other hand takes it energy source from the wind and using the blades to mechanically turn the armature within the magnetic field. This movement within the magnetic field induces an electrical current in the windings, which can be used to feed into the main power grid or into a battery bank in the case of a stand-alone system.

 

The rate of electricity generated is proportional to the speed at which the turbine turns. Before installing a wind generator you need to do some research into whether or not the location that you live in is suitable. You need to have what as known as clean wind meaning that there is no interference to the flow of wind into the generator like trees mountains builds etc. It is also a good idea to install some wind monitoring equipment and study the amount of wind you can actually take advantage of. You may find that your location is not suitable for a wind generator and you may need to look at other types of renewable energy like Solar Panels.

 

 

The use of wind generators for the creation of electricity is growing across the globe by a staggering rate of 30% per year. The fact that people are using the power of the wind it is making Wind Turbines one of the forefront in the Types of Renewable Energy and as the need for more electricity and the need to reduce greenhouse gases there will be more research and development conducted to better the technology that we are already using to make wind turbines more efficient and cheaper to construct.  As they find was to make them cheaper the more people will choose to use them making it a win win situation for use and the environment.
