According to the BLS employment report — table A-15, on p26 of the 38-page PDF you can download at BLS.gov — the REAL unemployment rate (called “U-6″) was 14.7% in September.
It was 14.7% in August. 14.8% in May, and 16.4% one year ago.
What is this U-6 thing?
U-6 Total unemployed, plus all persons
marginally attached to the labor force, plus
total employed part time for economic reasons,
as a percent of the civilian labor force plus all
persons marginally attached to the labor
force.
. . . essentially, if you want a full-time job, and you can only get a part-time job, this U-6 number counts you as not really employed. It’s the right thing.
