Wind Doesn’t Really Blow (at least not in ’12)

For the first year, in 2012 wind power was the most widespread renewable energy source in the US, with fresh installations accounting for 42% of new power capacity in the country, the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) said yesterday.

Altogether, renewables’ total share of new generating capacity came at 56%, contributing more than 50% of the total new power capacity in 2012. Between 2008 and 2012 the share of wind power in the US’ newly installed capacity was 36.5%, AWEA says.

In 2012 annual additions reached a record-high 13,124 MW. The top five states which accommodated most newly-built wind parks were Texas, California, Kansas, Oklahoma and Illinois.
