2013 Honors to Elon Musk — For NO Apparent Reason

Every once in a while, the media elevates someone who has as his (or her) main product something one could call Total Bullshit.

Donald Trump comes to mind immediately, doens’t he? So might Ted Turner.

Now add Elon Musk. Here’s a link to Industry Week’s written-in-awe piece. And here’s a sample:

Musk, perhaps more than anyone in the industry today, maintains a clear vision for what real 21st century technology is supposed to do and what kind of future it is supposed to be creating.

BACK IN REALITY, a group of analysts is doing a bang-up job of talking about what’s really going on with Musk’s headline-grabbing crapola company, Tesla. Examples:

From here.

Tesla’s Model S has a reputation for being eco-friendly because it does not emit harmful gases into the environment. However, manufacturing one battery for an EV releases between 10,000 and 40,000 pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Furthermore, the lithium required for the production of these lithium-ion batteries is mostly extracted through solar brines. And that’s not all; the European Commission on Science for Environmental Policy claimed that the extraction of lithium from these brines causes a significant environmental, health, and social impact to the places where li-ion is located.

And from John Petersen, in an article on Tesla’s huge battery problems:

The bottom line is that if Tesla wants to build a $4 billion revenue stream over the next few years, it will have to invest at least $1 billion in a battery factory to support its production. If Tesla wants to build a $10 billion revenue stream, it will have to invest about $2.5 billion in a battery factory. Once Tesla builds a battery factory, it will be wedded to a specific form factor and cell chemistry for the foreseeable future and its ability to respond to changes in battery technology will be limited.

Some media darlings are really excellent at selling the public on dreams. It is OK for such people to have dreams. When they get around to “marketing” them — and (in Musk’s case) getting people to buy into them via common stock — there is a serious problem.

Unfortunately, the people who make up our mass media apparently all live and work in buildings without mirrors.
