Above, one graphic from the AIA on its December “Architecture Billings Index” monthly report. Much more here.
What’s it all about? The November number was 49.8, which is two hairs under the “50″ line that divides the AIA survey’s results from forecasting expansion in construction (50 or over) to forecasting a slip (49.9 or lower). The survey is generally through to be a good forecasting tool for the future — 9 months away to as many as 15.
[Of course, no forecasting tool really works, but since this is about construction, we'll go with this.]
To sum up: Monthly reading in 2013 were positive for 9 of the 12 months. Unfortunately, the December reading fell (to 48.5). From the AIA December report’s verbiage:
Residential firms continue to report solid business conditions, as the residential market extends its healthy recovery. However, both commercial/industrial and institutional firms reported declines in December, and in both instances these declines accelerated from November levels.
