Geek.com on the cost of the 60W-equivalent LED (“SlimStyle”) from Philips:
Off the bat Philips will drop the price to $8.97, but that’s just the start. Energy Star approval opens the door to power company subsidies which are when the real price cuts come (at least as far as the end consumer is concerned). With utility rebates the SlimStyle will be sold for as low as $1.97 per bulb, making it highly affordable compared to what we’ve come to expect from today’s 60W-equivalent LED bulbs. (Update: Maine Efficiency is the utility that has committed to this pricing.)
Additional markets around the country (including states such as CT, HI, IN, MA, ME, MI, NJ, NV, RI, UT, WA and Washington, DC) can expect to see pricing as low as $3.97 in Home Depots.
Also from the Forbes piece, a bit on marketing:
“We’ve done a lot of research concerning the look and feel of LEDs. People don’t always want it to look exactly like what they’ve had. If they are going to pay more, it has to do something to make it look a little bit different. The SlimStyle shape causes people to say ‘Oh, maybe there is something different here.’ We think people will adopt it. The feedback so far is that the shape is very positively reviewed.”
