A two-page article in NEMA’s magazine (see p28-29 of this 44-page PDF) — by a guy from Lutron Electronics — goes into how energy-efficient lighting “makes microgrids, smart grid more reliable.”
Here’s a key contention — a “selling point” (if you need another one) for a lighting system retrofit:
As a result of buildings updating their basic lighting control infrastructure to meet code, they are increasingly becoming capable of connecting to a microgrid without the need for additional significant investments
So — yeah, lighting system renovations pay the customer NOW and pay the customer LATER. Should be a tough deal to turn down!
