In 1979, when I first got into the electrical construction biz (as an editor for Electrical Contractor magazine), my boss — Larry Osius, one of my two mentors — told me that the EC business was “the tail” of construction. They start building a structure, and much of our industry’s work came in at the end.
Perhaps it’s still true. Here are the data for the first 3 months of the past 10 years, including March 2014:
You can see that there’s been virtually NO increase in 2014′s first three months (the December 2013 number not shown, was 596,500. The March 2014 number is up all of 1.5%.
So construction is up 8.3% (in dollars) and electrical construction employment is up 1.5% in the same period. Make of that what you will — either we’re still the tail (a reasonable belief) . . . or . . . what?
